The Australian Mini Golf Championship hosted by Thornleigh Golf Centre was held on Sunday 6th November and an absolute cracker of a day was had by all. Excitement continued to build all day, commencing with live crosses to Channel 7’s Sunrise Program – where Steve Aisbett joined by Championship entrant Allan Cox set about educating Andrew O’Keefe and Monique Wright from Channel 7 on the differences between Putt Putt’s game of luck and the skills required for Mini Golf.
With the championship in full swing by 1pm, young and old tee’d off for the final 72 holes hoping for a shot at the many prizes including the big one for the winner – $3,500 dollars in cash, a trophy and a place in the hall of fame!
After the first 36 holes David Merriman led with par. As the temperature rose and players sought out a Powerade to help them home, Allan Cox made consecutive hole in ones on 8 and 9 on the billabong course which narrowed the margin to just 1 with 9 holes to play.
Then, on the penaltinum hole, David hit his ball out of bounds and Allan sunk two great 6 foot putts on the 71st and 72nd hole to win $3,500 cash and be the inaugural Australian Mini Golf Champion.
1st Place – Allan Cox
2nd place (tied) – David Merriman & Nathan Lamplough
3rd place – Stefan Nyul
Anson Lau played a fantastic game and took out the Junior category and was present with a ‘star player’ trophy and a 12 month mini golf pass – well done!
Special thanks to our major sponsor Coca Cola! Cold drinks were a welcome treat at the end of a mini golf marathon.
Congratulations Allan Cox, and to all the competitors. We hope everyone had a fabulous day and we look forward to doing it all again next year!
